ALGIM has been involved in information management for decades. We know how complex it can be, and how difficult it is to keep up with professional and personal development.  So, we've worked closely with nationally renowned IM expert Kerri Siatiras to develop online courses for IM practitioners.

    This intermediate course is designed for IM Practitioners who are responsible for managing the disposal of information and records within their organisation.

    The course explores the principles and practices involved with the disposal of information and records management across both the physical, and digital environments. It also covers the legal requirements relating to disposal in New Zealand, the processes involved in disposal, and how to use the Archives New Zealand General Disposal Authorities (GDAs). It also explores the process to develop and implement your own organisation-specific disposal authority.

    The course is divided into four modules of 90 minutes each. Each module is delivered online with its own workbook which is sent out to participants beforehand. There is also a small amount of homework to be done between modules to support learning.

      The course explores types of measurement, monitoring and reporting that may be appropriate and how to ensure the monitoring and reporting we do is useful.

        This intermediate level course is designed for those who already understand core concepts relating to information and records management, and are charged with the management of information assets (whether paper-based or digital).


        The course explores the ideas around information being an asset, how we can understand what information assets we hold (through development of an information asset register), and how managing information assets can improve information management within your local authority.

        This introductory level course is designed for those who are new to information and records management in any sector, who want to get to grips with information management best practice, or those who want to understand more about the 'why' of information management and what it involves.

        The course explores all the basics of information and records management across both the physical, and digital environments. It also covers the role information and records professionals play in their organisation, and how good information management contributes to their organisation's success.

        The course is divided into seven modules of 90 minutes each. Each module is delivered online with its own workbook which is sent out to participants beforehand. There is also a small amount of homework to be done between modules to support learning.

        The course covers the following:

        • Session 1 - course overview, defining IM and record-keeping
        • Session 2 - legislation and standards
        • Session 3 - storage and handling, disaster recovery and business continuity planning
        • Session 4 - creation and control using classification structures, physical file management
        • Session 5 - metadata, email management, databases
        • Session 6 - shared network drives, electronic document management systems, digitalisation
        • Session 7 - managing non-current information, disposal of information, archives

        Disposing of Public Records


        Designed for: Those that have been working in IM for several years. This is an intermediate level course. Focussed primarily on those that work in the public sector (noting that there is a local authority specific disposal course).

        Method: 4 online modules of 90 minutes each.

        Pre-requisites: completion of the Introducing Information Management course, or equivalent experience.

        Developing an Information Management Strategy

        An IM Strategy is an essential tool for organisations as it prioritises planning for managing information, and links IM initiatives to overall business strategies and plans. This strategic programme, developed for IM Leads and Managers, is more than just an online course. As well as scheduled online class sessions, it includes coaching and one-on-one mentoring to support attendees in the development of an IM strategy.


        The course is divided into seven modules of 90 minutes each.  Each module is delivered online with its own workbook which is sent out to participants beforehand. There are also two extended out of class periods where attendees have the chance to get started on developing their IM strategy. The online group sessions are then followed up with one-on-one coaching sessions to maximise the benefits of the learning.

        Course topics

        Week one – three online sessions:

        • setting the scene, understanding why your organisation needs an IM strategy and overview of the development process

        • looking at the big picture and context for IM
        • understanding the development process and IM principles.


        Weeks two and three - outside of class exercise
          

        • planning and preparation for development of your strategy.


        Week four – three online sessions:

        • exploring current IM challenges
        • developing skill sets to meet IM challenges
        • turning strategy into action.


          Weeks five and six - outside of class exercise
           

          • developing a 90-day action plan and making a start on developing your IM strategy.


          Week seven – one online session

          • understanding realistic goals, measuring improvements, reflection and next steps.


          Follow-up sessions:

          • First follow-up one-on-one session a month later. A one-hour online discussion with you and Kerri about what you have achieved, any barriers to achieving the goals identified for the first 30 days and working through options to address those barriers.
          • Second follow-up one-on-one session scheduled when the draft IM strategy is completed. A one-hour online discussion between attendee and Kerri about their draft IM Strategy.
