ALGIM and the Smart Cities Council New Zealand Forge Strategic Partnership

The Association of Local Government Information Management (ALGIM) and Smart Cities Council New Zealand (SCC) have entered a strategic partnership through reciprocal membership between the two organisations to improve collaboration, knowledge exchange, and support for mutual priorities across New Zealand’s local government and smart cities ecosystem.

The agreement establishes reciprocal membership between the two organisations, recognising their shared commitment to digital innovation, smarter infrastructure, and more connected communities.

As part of this partnership, which recognises shared commitment to digital innovation, smarter infrastructure, and more connected communities, ALGIM members are invited to become Subscribers to SCC’s regional activities at no cost for the term of the agreement, ensuring open access to the Council’s thought leadership, events, and policy engagement opportunities.

ALGIM Chief Executive Mike Manson said, “This partnership with Smart Cities Council strengthens the support we provide to our members. We look forward to delivering more value, more opportunities and stronger community outcomes together.”

“We’re excited to be working more closely with ALGIM,” said Mark Thomas, Regional Lead for New Zealand at Smart Cities Council. “Their work with local government leaders is an important part of shaping future-ready communities.

Key outcomes of the partnership include:

    • Reciprocal, in-kind membership exchange to foster deeper knowledge sharing and stronger industry connections.
    • Quarterly co-hosted online events and joint participation in in-person engagements, including speaking and promotional opportunities.
    • Collaboration on thought leadership content, research and cross-promotion of insights to broaden sector impact.
    • Joint advocacy and policy alignment, supporting the voice of smart local government in broader national and regional forums.

Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is the difference between Subscription and Membership?
Smart Cities Council subscribers receive tailored insights, early access to exclusive content and opportunities, on-demand resources, and more. However, whilst able to access information and be ahead of the curb, the next stage of Smart Cities engagement, joining as member, includes publishing news or case studies, participating in task forces or programs and receiving first-preference for online and in person event participation among other benefits.
2) Are ALGIM members now members of Smart Cities Council?
No. ALGIM itself is a member of Smart Cities Council. ALGIM members are offered the opportunity to become subscribers, free of charge. This arrangement exists because of the Strategic Partnership ALGIM has struck with Smart Cities Council.

For more information about Membership, and to view local pricing, please visit: https://www.smartcitiescouncil.com/membership and use the code SCCNZ26 at checkout.
3) How is this different to the previous partnership?
Under a previous 3-year partnership (2021), New Zealand councils were given the opportunity to engage and contribute to the Smart Cities agenda internationally as members of Smart Cities Council. Whilst ALGIM itself remains a member of Smart Cities Council, the revised structure offers a platform to Councils looking to shine a spotlight on their work, accelerate capability and capacity building, join task forces, events, podcasts, webinars and global engagements as a thought leader or world-leading city, region or town.
